History and curiosities of Larimar
Larimar is a unique stone that is only found in one deposit in the world, in the Dominican Republic, hence its high value and price. In the heart of the Bahoruco mountains these mines are the only place in the world where you can find Larimar. Workers spend eight to nine hours underground, mining this rare blue stone at depths of up to 40 meters. When it's over, there will be no more. It is one of the most precious stones of the new age.
How was it discovered? Legend has it that in 1916, a former priest from the parish of Barahona explored a mine discovering blue rocks. Nobody knew what material it was and accidentally in a transport these precious rocks fell into the water. Nothing was known until 58 years later. In 1974, Miguel Méndez and volunteer Norman Rilling saw a blue band of sand in the coastal province of Barahona. They dug and discovered the Larimar. The natives of the island thought that this stone came from the sea and called it "the blue stone". Mendez named it Larimar, associating the name of his daughter Larissa and the sea.
