Gotland is considered one of the best-preserved medieval sites in Scandinavia, declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1995. Currently, some examples of the lenses are housed in the Fornsalen Museum in Visby and the National Museum of Sweden in Stockholm.

Through various studies conducted on the Gotland lenses, we know that applied optics technology was already being used by artisans over 1,000 years ago, 500 years before Descartes calculated the specific shape for this type of lens, and that it foreshadowed the first telescopes in Europe in the late 16th century.
